drew-green replied to your post: I read a post about male privelidge that really…
You’re never allowed to talk about race or gender if you’re a white male. It’s an internet rule, duh. And I’ve broken it and all hell broke loose as my words were misconstrued and I was demonized. Not worth the headache.
It really offends me, as a feminist, to be told I can’t be one by certain people because of my gender.
The thing that bugged me concerned someone saying that it was a male privilege to be able to walk to your house without having to clutch your keys in your hand tightly for fear of being attacked.
I live on a rough estate, and last night I was mugged. I don’t think that had anything to do with my male privilege. In fact, my female flat mates agreed that they probably wouldn’t have been mugged in the same situation, because muggers are more aware women might have defensive strategies prepared, etc. I don’t think that’s particularly true, but I don’t think on my estate I feel any safer just because I’m a man.
It’s the same with the rape of men, which is not considered legitimate by some people.
